Standby roundups pair Generac and Kohler the way truck reviews pair Ford and Chevy, and the two make different bets. Generac wins on price per kilowatt and on the size of its installer network. Kohler wins on the hardware: the Command PRO engine is the same family that powers commercial equipment, the enclosure is aluminum instead of powder-coated steel, and the warranty is written in hours as well as years — 2,000 of them, which matters in outage-heavy regions where a generator can log 300 hours in a bad winter.

The 200SELS bundle is the one to buy because it includes the 200A RXT service-entrance switch, which installs between the meter and the panel and doubles as the main disconnect — no separate sub-panel work. Its load-management board sheds and restores two HVAC systems and four additional circuits automatically, so 24 natural-gas kilowatts behaves like more. The RDC2 controller handles both generator and switch and reports to Kohler's app.
