Generac's Guardian line went more than a decade without a real platform change, so the Next Gen series matters beyond the extra four kilowatts. The engine is new: electronic fuel and ignition control replaces the old mechanical setup, hydraulic lifters eliminate valve adjustments, and the service interval doubles to 200 hours. The controller is new too, with cellular connectivity standard — which sounds like a small thing until an outage takes your internet down with it and the WiFi-only monitoring on older units goes dark exactly when you'd want it.

The 28kW rating puts this in a class by itself among air-cooled units. Twenty-five natural-gas kilowatts runs a 4,000-square-foot house with two AC compressors, an electric range, a well pump, and an EV charger without the transfer switch shedding anything — and the included 200A switch is service-entrance rated with whole-home surge protection built in, which normally costs extra. The honest question is whether you need it. Most homes are fully served by the 24kW Guardian for roughly $1,500 less, and that unit's reliability record is the thing you're actually buying a Generac for. Buy the 28 when your installer's load calculation says the 24 is marginal, when you want cellular monitoring, or when you'd rather own the new platform with the longer service interval — and get the gas-meter conversation started before the unit ships, because 297 cubic feet per hour at full load is more than many residential meters deliver.
