The verdict
Champion's 12.5kW brings automatic standby ownership in under the equivalent Generac bundle, with a 100A outdoor-rated transfer switch in the box and a 10-year limited warranty that's the longest in the class. The trade is a smaller dealer network than Generac's and capacity that means choosing your backed-up circuits rather than backing up the panel. For essentials-focused buyers, it's a lot of automation for the money.

Champion applied its portable-generator value playbook to standbys, and its units undercut equivalent Generac bundles by a meaningful margin while carrying a longer warranty. The engineering is solid — the −22°F cold-start rating is better than most of the category.
The honest caveat is the network. Standby generators need annual service and the occasional warranty visit; Generac's installer density makes that trivially easy almost everywhere, while Champion's is regional. Search for a Champion-servicing dealer within an hour of you before you order. If one exists, this is the value pick; if not, pay the Generac premium.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers who want set-and-forget backup of the circuits that matter.
